On the way down to Capetown last year we stopped over at The Cape Karoo Guest House on the outskirts of Beaufort West. Superb accommodation and highly recommendable!
I took a drive on the R381 through the Nuweveld mountains on the road towards Loxton. Initially tar and then gravel taking you over the Molteno pass and on to Loxton 110km away. The Molteno pass was built by Thomas Bains circa 1881 and is supposedly one of the oldest in the country. The R381 Beaufort to Loxton is considered by many to be one of the most scenic stretches of road around and I would have to concur … stunning to say the least! I didn’t drive all the way to Loxton because I started out latish but what I saw was well worth the effort and time spent … particularly the Molteno pass.
What I really like about this painting is the converging lines in the composition. They really take you down that road and into the Nuweveld mountains.
