This painting is still very typically ‘Bonney’ in concept content and feel but subtly different in that there is more content and close detail than normal. Typically my content consists of a smallish focal point in a biggish landscape where the landscape is dominant. The ‘more content’ in this painting will be visible and noticeable in the photo but the close and intimate detail you probably won’t easily see without viewing the full size original. In this painting there is a lot more intricacy in detail than normal and hopefully that without losing the spontaneity.
The challenge for me is to get more close and intimate detail but still maintain a loosish natural look. So much of photo realism in painting these days tends towards stiff and starchy and overly ‘photographic’ as a result of painting in every rock pebble twig and blade of grass in the interests of realism. I think this is a trap and I try to avoid it by way of using technique and the interaction of paint, brush and surface texture to create an illusion of reality without actually painting in every jot and tittle of detail.
