South African Artist Peter Bonney
Realist painter specializing in the Karoo and rural South African landscape
Peter Bonney, was born in 1953 in the Cape but his formative years were in the Kwa Zulu Natal Drakensberg in the small farming town of Bergville. He matriculated from Durban High School in 1970. Tertiary education was not in the arts but in analytical industrial chemistry. He worked in that field for some ten years before opting out to take up his first love … painting.
Despite having no formal art training but with much guidance and mentorship in the studio of fellow artist Hannes Du Plessis Peter’s work very soon began selling well and he held his first one man exhibition at the Crake gallery in Johannesburg in 1986.
He has sold prolifically over the years since then and has held thirty one man exhibitions as well as participating in some fifty group shows.
His works now hang in innumerable corporate and institutional collections as well as in hundreds of substantial private collections both in South Africa and abroad including that of renowned talk show host Oprah Winfrey.
He is currently based in Clarens in the Eastern Freestate in South Africa. His work is available from his Clarens studio and at Cherie’ De Villiers Gallery in Johannesburg.
